Rhinitis (Pratishyaya)
It is a pathological condition characterized by spasmodic attacks of sneezing & running nose occurs due to altered reactivity of the nasal mucosa to certain allergens.
Causes & Pathogenasis:
Modern Aspect : when a person with sensitized immune system is exposed to or inhale allergen such as pollen or dust , it triggers the antibody production. These antibodies bind with mast cell result in the secreation of histamine & other chemicals which causes inflammation of mucous membrane of the nose producing several sign & symptoms.
Risk Factors : Hereditory, change in humidity, atmospheric pollution, hormonal effect, emotional conditions.
Ayurvedic Aspect : As per Ayurveda ,this condition can be correlated with Pratishyaya Roga. In this condition the vitiated vatadi ( Vata,Pitta & Kapha ) doshas either individually or together accumulates in the shiras(head) , then propogates to the nose & causes the Pratishyaya roga.
Reasons for vatadi doshas vitiation :
- Intake of cold food articles & incompatible food
- Exposure to rain or snowfall
- Swimming in water
- Exposure to dust,smoke or cold wind
- Low immunity,ill health, living in unhygienic surroundings
- Psychologic factors like excessive anger,fear etc.
- Nasal injury.

Causes & Pathogenasis:
Modern Aspect : Sinuses are air-filled spaces in the skull bone which are lined with mucus membrane. Due to any infection, allergies or nasal diseases (deviated nasal septum, nasal bone spur, nasal polyps) the opening of sinuses get blocked along with increased mucus secretion leading to this condition. Risk Factors : Common cold,influenza,deviated nasal septum, nasal polyp, nasal spur, nasal tumour, dental infections, atmospheric pollution, low immunity.
Ayurvedic Aspect :According to charaka & sushrutha samhita, it is a complication of pratishyaya. The vitiated vatadi( vata,pitta & kapha )doshas either individually or together accumulates in the shiras(head), then propogates to the nose & causes the Pratishyaya roga & if this pratishyaya is not treated on time ,this may lead to Dusta pratishyaya( sinusitis)
